10 must have baby registry gifts that keep on giving

Let's talk must have baby registry items.

Perhaps you or someone you know is expecting. It's common to shower the expectant with gifts for their little one. Now that my daughter is a toddler and we are blessed to have all the things, I've grown to appreciate the items I've continued to use beyond the newborn stage.

It may not feel like it when you're in it, but the time truly goes so fast. Before you know it, you won't need as much when your baby is not so little anymore (unless perhaps you plan to have more children).

This list will suggest baby registry items to include on your baby registry (or give as a gift) that can grow with your child (commissions earned).

DaVinci Jenny Lind convertible crib.

Most cribs are convertible in the sense that you can lower the bottom as your child grows so they may remain in the crib as long as safely possible. I love this one, because you can purchase the DaVinci Jenny Lind Toddler Bed Conversion Kit separately for when your little one is ready to move to their "big kid bed."

A word to the wise: consider purchasing the conversion kit at the same as the crib. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it was out of stock forever. You don't want to be without it or unable to score the coordinating color when you suddenly need to make the switch for your little one's safety!

Freshly Picked Classic Leather Diaper Bag Backpack.

I cannot recommend a BACKPACK enough, because nothing beats the ability to be hands-free. Your hands are never really free as a parent, but having your diaper bag on your back enables you to hold or do other things with your hands!

While Freshly Picked is somewhat of a splurge, it has been well worth it. I had two other forgettable brands that were a fraction of the cost before taking the plunge, but you get what you pay for! The straps broke in what seemed like no time at all - talk about an inconvenience when you're on the go.

On the contrary, I've used my Freshly Picked backpack for several years with no signs of wear. It sustained spills and washing. It comes in a variety of styles and sizes to suit your needs (you may wish to downsize to the Freshly Picked mini classic diaper bag backpack once your little one is potty trained) and includes a coordinating changing mat.

You won't regret treating yourself or putting this on your baby registry! Speaking of diaper bags, check out my friend's article how to pack a diaper bag perfectly in 10 minutes.

Bogg bag original waterproof washable tote.

If becoming a parent means becoming a bag lady, OWN IT! Get yourself THEE best bags out there! Also available in a variety of solid and patterned designs and sizes, you will love the versatility of your Bogg bag

I've seen mamas put their Bogg Bag in their suitcase so they're never without it! Think of Crocs, but make it a bag (commissions earned)! Also like Crocs, you can customize with adorable Bogg bits to make your Bogg bag unique.

You won't have to worry about dirt, sand or water. And you can easily fit beach towels, sun protection, swim gear and pool or beach snacks for the entire family!

Ingenuity SmartClean Trio Elite 3-in-1 Baby High Chair.

Ooh but I love this one! This high chair is sleek, gender neutral and easy to clean. Since it lacks traditional padding, it's easy to wipe down and the tray is dishwasher safe. This chair evolves with your baby!

It converts from a high chair, to a booster seat to a toddler chair. The 360 wheels make it easy to move around your living space. This is a great reasonably priced "big ticket item" to include on your baby registry.

Infant Optics DXR-8 Video Baby Monitor.

Mom groups all seem to agree - we love the Infant Optics baby monitor! Many of us have been using it for years with no complaints. I love the video viewing screen and ability to adjust the brightness and volume. I can hear my daughter, and she can hear me if I talk while holding the microphone button.

There is a wide viewing area with the adjustable camera - my daughter is older now and sleeps in a "big kid bed" - I can easily sweep the camera around the room to be able to see her as she plays in her room during the day or flip flops on the bed throughout the night! You can add cameras if you have multiple children.

Posh Peanut Swaddles

I'm well aware that there are swaddles that velcro shut and whatnot that will be essential during the newborn stage, but your little will outgrow those once they can rollover.

A traditional swaddle withstands the test of time - it's lightweight and large. Simple swaddles are perfect for naps, carseat or stroller blankets. They pack up discreetly, which makes them perfect for travel. I love Posh Peanut's soft ans stretchy bamboo blend - the perfect combination for sensitive baby skin and eczema-prone skin.

YogaSleep Hushh Portable White Noise Sound Machine

Are you seeing the theme? Good sleep hygiene is so important, and a sound machine can be part of that to drown out extraneous noises that can disrupt sleep.

This one is small and easy to take on the go. It even comes with a little hook - I once saw a new mother with this sound machine hanging on the strap of her nursing tank top (commissions earned). I can totally relate - anything not to muck up the sleep routine!

Skip Hop Activity Center.

My daughter began using this at a young age and continues to use it to this day. When your little one outgrows the chair, the bottom can be removed and inserted in the top to create a table! Purchase Skip Hop toddler activity chairs separately to make a set.

We've used this set to play, eat, color, bake cookies - you name it! Much like the conversion kit for the crib, you should purchase the coordinating chairs in advance.

Bumkins baby feeding bibs.

These bibs are easy to clean and machine washable. The pocket at the bottom can catch some of the mess - whether it's from the slobbery teething days or from introducing new foods.

I keep these bibs in my carsickness caddy (commissions earned). If my daughter experiences carsickness symptoms and vomits, the bib covers most of the carseat straps and buckles, and the pocket prevents it from ending up in her lap! The velcro neck closure makes it safer than a tie to be removed in case of emergency.

Philips AVENT powder formula dispenser and snack cup.

Ah, another theme - versatility! If you formula feed,  you'll love the three separate compartments and the ability to pour directly from the swivel top (commissions earned).

You can also store snacks on the go. The entire insert is removable, creating one large container - perfect for snacks like Gerber puffsGerber yogurt melts and Pepperidge Farm goldfish crackers (commissions earned).

Summary

Expecting a baby is certainly an exciting time, and it's not uncommon for the expectant to get carried away and make emotional decisions when it comes to creating a baby registry and making purchases. I love a thoughtful gift that is also practical with some longevity that lends itself to more usefulness and less clutter.

While there are some items that are only likely to be used albeit very helpful during the infant stage, there are quite a few that can grow and change along with the child. Any of the aforementioned gifts would be great additions to any baby registry registry or gift table. Any gift that extends beyond infancy would prove most useful and be much appreciated!

Have you given or received any gifts that can grow with a child?

Screening colonoscopy prep and procedure: a firsthand account

Content warning: mentions cancer and death If I had a dollar for every time a patient came into my office and said they “want to be checked for cancer,” well…I probably wouldn’t be writing this blog post! There is no single universal test for cancer, but common things happen commonly. Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths when men and women are combined ( cancer.org ). Screening for colorectal cancer should be on your list to be “checked for cancer.”  For those at average risk, screening for colorectal cancer should begin at age 45 ( cdc.gov ). If you want to know more about colorectal cancer incidence, risk factors and screening methods, then check out last week's blog post  here . I am at increased risk for colorectal cancer, because my father died from complications of colon cancer when he was only 45. So though I’m only in my thirties, I’ve already had my first screening colonoscopy, which is the gold standard screening method for individuals a...

Looking to save money? 4 High Yield Savings Accounts you should check out!

Looking to save money? 4 High Yield Savings Accounts you should check out!  Let’s talk high yield savings accounts (HYSAs). Gone are the days of having “mattress money.” Or at least they should be. Why? Because you should not be keeping your emergency fund under your bed! Wouldn’t it be better to put your money where it could make you MORE money while you sleep instead?   If you have an emergency fund, you are already ahead of the game. Check out this article  that states only 44% of Americans can cover a $1,000 emergency expense from their savings. An emergency or rainy day fund is just what it sounds like: money set aside for unforeseen costly circumstances. Think car or home repairs, medical emergencies, pet injuries - you get the picture. These things can happen to anyone, so we should all prepare for them. You’ll find that the more prepared you are, the less emergencies you will experience! So what should you do? First, aim to have $1,000 set aside. Ideally, you will...
